The MCS Sustainable Seafood Programme made it into the shortlist of three for Campaign of the Year in the recent Observer Ethical Awards. The MCS programme enables buyers to make informed choices in terms of the sustainability of seafoods being sold in supermarkets, fishmongers and other outlets.
The campaign started in 1998, and the first annual Good Fish Guide was published in 2002. As a result of the guide's lists of Fish to Eat and Fish to Avoid, chains including Asda, Co-op, M&S, Sainsbury's, Somerfield, Tesco and Waitrose have removed various species from sale. Hotel and restaurant chains have also taken the findings into account when shaping seafood policy. Commenting on its top-three placing in the Observer awards, the MCS said: 'Nomination for this award is recognition for the effectiveness of this campaign and reflects a surge in public interest in making fisheries management sustainable.'
