Long-haul friendship

Two diving clubs have decided to twin - despite the fact that they could not be further apart.

The clubs are in Cardiff, Wales and Sydney, Australia - and members of both intend to make the most of the connection, with some heavy two-way travel in years to come.
The twining involves the British Sub-Aqua Club's Cardiff branch and Sydney Sub-Aqua Club. It has occurred largely because the Sydney club's chairman, Steve Taylor, was chairman of the Cardiff club before he moved to Australia.
A further link is that Cardiff's expeditions leader, Ben Crossett, trained one of Sydney's newest members, Bijal Bhagwan.
Knowing what both clubs achieve in diving, Taylor, with the agreement of Cardiff chairman Mark Gosling, thought it worth establishing the link.
'It made sense for the clubs to twin,' said Taylor, 'not only because of the role I used to play within Cardiff BSAC, but also in our love of the sport.
'Our diving takes us all round New South Wales as well as other parts of Australia and the rest of the world.'
Mark Gosling said: 'We have a great deal in common. We dive all year, and in the past two years we have organised trips to the Red Sea, Oban, Scapa Flow, the Scillies and the Isle of Man, not to mention numerous trips to West Wales and the South Coast of England using both hard boats and our club RIB.'
Taylor finalised the twinning on a recent return to Wales for a diving friend's wedding, when he met up with his old club-mates. 'This will not be an empty gesture,' he promised. 'We're looking forward to having joint club dives in the not-too-distant future.'
