Diving in the twilight zone
|
Diving in the least-explored region of the ocean, at depths between 70m and 150m, is the theme of a forthcoming BBC TV series called Pacific Abyss - and the focus of a major presentation at this weekend's DIVE 2007 show at the NEC.

Often referred to as the 'twilight zone', this extreme and dangerous diving environment has been explored and filmed by a 30-strong team whotravelled nearly 2000 miles through the tiny islands of Micronesia.
Among the divers was celebrated US marine-life expert Mike deGruy, who will giving Dive 2007 visitors a preview of the thrilling new series. Included will be his own deep-diving adventures with fellow-presenter Kate Humble, encountering spectacular wildlife and searching for new fish species in remote locations that have never been dived before.
Other marine-life experts in the formidable line-up of speakers at DIVE 2007 include Fabien Cousteau (describing his fascinating efforts to dive with great white sharks using his 'robo-shark' submarine), and Monty Halls (talking about his new Swimming With Giants TV film). Meanwhile, closer to home, Richard Peirce will re-live his recent dives filming and researching porbeagle sharks off Cornwall.
Wreck diving also features strongly in speaker presentations at the show.
Deep-wreck specialist Leigh Bishop is teaming up with Rick Stanton to present the story of a remarkable trip to New Zealand to explore both a deep submerged cave and the famed gold-bullion liner wreck Niagara off North Island.
And submarine hunter Innes McCartney will be recounting his recent discovery in the English Channel of a Nazi raider warship, and describing how he cracked two submarine puzzles in one trip to Eyemouth.
The UK's biggest event for divers, DIVE 2007 takes place at the NEC, Birmingham this weekend (October 13/14). As well as a stunning line-up of top diving speakers, it features more than 300 exhibitors offering the best in diving gear, holidays and training courses - plus a host of in-hall attractions including try-dive pools, dive gear displays and underwater photo galleries.
