Sold as 'rock salmon', 'flake' or 'huss', the spiny dogfish is listed as critically endangered in the north-eastern Atlantic. But before it steps into campaign mode, the Shark Trust wants to gather more information on the extent of trade in the creature.
One obvious avenue open to researchers is to observe catches sold at fish markets. But assistance from the public would help provide an idea of the extent to which the fish is bought as a finished food.
'It is important that we understand the level of demand for this shark ahead of a campaign to encourage the public to reduce consumer demand for this species,' said Ali Hood, Shark Trust Director of Conservation.
The role of any volunteers would be easy, she said, 'just requiring a stroll past their local fish and chip shop, and an email to the Trust reporting whether the shop does or doesn't sell rock salmon/flake/huss'.
