Thirty-eight-year-old Steven Ottewell, from Cuddington in Cheshire, got into difficulty while diving the 40m-deep Markgraf, on Saturday morning.
His buddy surfaced without him, raised the alarm and the skipper of the dive boat Karen put out an emergency call.
Shetland Coastguard launched its search and rescue helicopter, the Stromness and Longhope RNLI boats were launched, and Coastguard shore teams from Stromess and Hoy scoured the coastline.
Conditions for the remainder of the weekend were, however, against the searchers, with winds of up to near-gale force at times. Searches were terminated as dusk fell on Sunday.
With an abatement in the weather police divers have, this week, started to search the area, having placed an exclusion zone around the wreck site. |
