Divers of Whiston and Prescott Sub-Aqua Club, a branch of the SAA near St Helens, are now the proud owners of a 6.5m Humber RIB, complete with 175hp outboard - a four-stroke designed to combine efficient cruising with the ability to idle for extended periods when covering divers.
The long-established club, which has some 40 members and has trained divers since 1974, was able to purchase the boat thanks to a ?10,000 National Lottery grant and ?9,500 from the region's Coalfields Regeneration Trust.
'Coalfields is a local trust. Its objective is to improve the local community following the demise of the coal industry in and around St Helens,' club member Mark Jackson told Divernet. As with the Lottery Fund, Coalfields' stipulation has been that 'we encourage local people to join our club so that the community benefits from the award'.
'The boat will be used for training new divers in the sea, and conducting diving expeditions to places such as Scotland, North Wales and Northumberland,' said Jackson. 'We are committed to underwater conservation and may also be called upon to help marine biologists with underwater research.'
