Big grant boosts maritime archaeology
A Hampshire-based group has been given around £335,000 to promote maritime archaeology in the region.

The Heritage Lottery Fund grant of 'over a third of a million pounds' has gone to the Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology (HWTMA), which has an impressive 17-year record of spreading enthusiasm for, and participation in, maritime archaeology and projects, mainly in the Solent area.

Working both with adult groups and in schools, the HWTMA has established successful educational programmes which manage to bring to life the histories and cultural values of wrecks and their contents, allied with archaeological diving and study. The programmes have drawn interest from as far afield as Canada and Australia.

Armed with the generous grant, the HWTMA is to embark on a three-year project in which a 'community outreach van will be furnished with interactive displays, information and hands-on activities to make learning about maritime heritage possible for all the community'.

'This will allow many more people to find out about the fascinating archaeology that lies beneath the Solent and is scattered along rivers throughout Hampshire and the Isle of Wight,' said the trust.

Over the next three years, the van will 'become a popular attraction throughout the region' with appearances at schools and community gatherings, and at events such as the New Forest Show. It will also venture further afield to 'national public events such as the Education Show'.
