According to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the male diver surfaced unconscious from a dive yesterday morning, 19 October, just east of Portland's Grove Point.
An emergency call was put out by his dive boat, Shiraz, and he was airlifted by Coastguard helicopter to Dorset County Hospital, where he was declared dead later in the day.
While Shiraz was occupied with the evacuation, other dive boats in the area helped to recover other divers from the water.
