Lucky escape for surfer
|
A surfer has survived an attack by a large shark, probably a great white - because a wave happened to arrive at the right moment to wash him ashore.

Jake Heron, 40, was gearing up to catch a wave in Fishery Bay, 19 miles south of Port Lincoln in South Australia, when the shark attacked. The incident was clearly witnessed by a surfing friend nearby.
According to a report in Australia's The Courier-Mail, Heron was knocked from his board but was lucky that the shark, estimated at about 4m in length, decided next to bite the board rather than him.
Heron was able to regain part of the board, which had been broken in two, in an attempt to escape on the next wave. The shark was seen to attempt to grab Heron's leg and an arm, but he was able to fend it off before a wave picked him up and carried him in to shore.
Heron was taken to hospital in Port Lincoln, where he required stitches to his arm and leg. Examination of teeth marks on remains of Heron's board backed the assumption that his injuries had been inflicted by a great white.
Last month a scuba-diving biologist, 23-year-old Jarrod Stehbens, was killed by a great white off the southern Australian town of Adelaide.
