Exercise Mayan Finn 04 was carried out on behalf of the Royal Geographical Society and Coral Cay Conservation. The team operated out of the British Forces Adventure Training Centre at St Georges Cay, in Belize.
The project continued work undertaken by previous RAF expeditions that won British Sub-Aqua Jubilee Trust Awards in 2001 and 2003. During some 300 dives, the team surveyed marine life in the shallows of Turniff Reef, in the Blue Hole and in the Abyss, at depths of around 50m. Collections of flamingo tongue cowries, for instance, indicated that the reef is recovering from hurricane damage.
Eleven divers were drawn from eight different RAF and MoD units, qualifications ranging from BSAC Sport to Advanced Diver and including Military Sub-Aqua Diving Supervisors.
