Turtle freed

A giant leatherback turtle was freed in early May after getting caught up in fishing gear off Dominica, in the West Indies.

The turtle had become ensnared in a fish trap plus the mooring lines of boats in a Dominican harbour. Marine biologist Rowan Byrne went out to the site, entered the water and cut away the snagged lines.
Taking some time to regain its strength, the turtle was able to swim off after about an hour.
Byrne is Director of Dominica's Rosalie Sea Turtle Initiative, a community-based project which aims to protect endangered turtle species which exist around Dominica and nest on its shores.
Four years old, the organisation has 'reduced poaching by 90% on nesting beaches', Byrne told Divernet. |
