They will range from fish, sharks and whales to birds and even polar bears. The resulting data will help in many areas, from assessing the effects of climate change to managing fisheries.
Led by Ron O'Dor, a biologist at Dalhousie University in Halifax, the team has applied for a $32 million grant from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation to establish its Ocean Tracking Network, with tag data transmitted via satellite and acoustic receivers on ocean bottoms.
An estimated $150 million will be required to fund the entire six-year project. |
