David Cowen, 35, from London, had hired equipment from a dive centre near Phuket's Orchidacea resort, and headed out for a solo dive.
His body was spotted by a fisherman near Phuket's Kata beach. When it was recovered, gashes to his forehead and neck suggested he had had a struggle to free himself from an underwater crevice or other obstruction.
It was thought that he had drowned, but a post mortem has yet to confirm the cause of his death.
Conditions when Cowen went diving were reported to have been quite choppy and breezy.
He was reported to have been holidaying alone, and to have taken a room at an Orchidacea resort hotel after staying on another part of the Thai coast.
