On Sunday, a 41-year-old spearfisher suffered a fractured skull after being hit by a boat propeller as he ascended from a dive off Shelley Beach in New South Wales. He was taking part in a spearfishing competition in which the boat that hit him was also reportedly involved.
The man was airlifted to hospital for initial treatment, and moved to another for emergency neurosurgery. His condition remains unreported.
Late last week, near Reedsport in Oregon, USA, a 44-year-old man was lucky to survive after being shot in the head by a .22-calibre rifle as he snorkelled in a river.
He was fortunate to be hit on thick bone in front of an ear, and his skull was not penetrated. He was described as comfortable after surgeons operated to remove fragmented bone and broken remains of the bullet.
The shooter, a 60-year-old male resident of Reedsport, told police he thought the snorkeller was a nutria (a semi-aquatic rodent, similar in appearance to a beaver).
He was remanded in custody, charged with illegal possession of the firearm, and of methamphetamine and marijuana. |
