The diver, described as a male in his 40s, was reported to have been diving for crayfish with family and friends off the coast of Porongahu, some 35km south of Waimarama in Hawke's Bay, North Island.
Details of the incident are not clear but, according to New Zealand media, the diver was not far from shore when his lower stomach was pierced by the barb. He was brought ashore and tended by ambulance staff before evacuation by helicopter to Hawke's Bay Hospital.
A spokesman for the rescue helicopter service said the diver had been in 'a lot of pain', but that he remained in a stable condition during transfer. Hospital staff later reported that, following treatment, he was comfortable and recovering well.
