Findings published in the online journal Current Biology conclude that 55 per cent of the world's coral-based fishing environments are headed for depletion at levels that will decimate reefs and destroy local livelihoods.
The researchers say that it would take an area of tropical coral four times the size of the Great Barrier Reef to sustain current fishing levels. They predict that many inhabited island atolls will become abandoned this century. |
