Skipper Mahmoud recently spotted a pod of dolphins in the early morning. As he manoeuvred the boat closer for a better view, several dolphins seemed to be providing a protective guard around one of the larger ones.
Noticing a flush of blood, Mahmoud thought was that the dolphin had been injured, but it soon became clear that it was giving birth.
The protective barrier of dolphins maintained its position as the new mother held her new-born calf out of the water to take its first breaths, and soon it was swimming freely.
Dive guide Vlado said: 'We all watched on in amazement; we couldn't stop. At a time like this you get closer to nature and somehow it changes you.'
Mahmoud added: 'In 30 years at sea I have never seen anything like it, and will remember it always.' |
