All water-based activities have been banned, in order to protect the local population of dugongs, which had been suffering harassment from water users.
The move was instigated by the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA), which became fearful for the creatures' future in the area.
The closure will also be of benefit to the giant green turtles and guitar sharks which have often been seen by diving visitors.
The ban will have a major effect on diving patterns. Liveaboards have regularly used the bay as a last-day dive site as they make their way back to Marsa Alam's Port Galib. They have often stayed overnight on moorings that have now been removed with the bay's closure.
Ashore there is a dive centre as well as two hotels. Swimming off the land is banned along with all diving, snorkelling and boating.
