Created with the help scientists from Scotland's Heriot-Watt University, the reserve is in the Las Perlas Archipelago, a pearl-fishing area. The Las Perlas Special Management Zone covers 70,000 hectares.
Herriot-Watt, with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and financial support from DEFRA's Darwin Initiative, will monitor over-fished species such as snappers and lobsters, along with whale sharks, migrating humpback whales, and leatherback turtles, which hatch on local beaches.
