HMAS Adelaide, which has just been officially decommissioned, will be scuttled at a site somewhere off central New South Wales. The ship was deployed three times to the Persian Gulf and twice to East Timor in a 27-year career.
It also hit the news by rescuing solo yachtsmen Tony Bullimore and Thierry Dubois from the Southern Ocean in the 1996/97 Vendee Globe round-the-world race.
The ship was Australia's second to bear the Adelaide name. The first was a light cruiser that served from 1922 to 1946. The name will now go to a new Canberra-class vessel.
