Sidescan sonar and an ROV, deployed by two wreck enthusiasts, Jim Kennard and Dan Scoville, located HMS Ontario, a 24m, 22-gun sloop sunk by storm in 1780. It is partially listing and its two masts still stand.
Even the glass in two stern windows remains unbroken. The ship's preservation has been put down to the lake's cold, fresh water, and lack of light and oxygen.
Sunk with loss of life, the wreck is regarded as a war grave, and there are no plans to tamper with it or remove any artefacts. |
