We're not sure whether Vittorio Innocente has any competitors in his chosen field but, following his dive and ride off Portofino in northern Italy, he is now listed in World Guinness Records as the person who has cycled the longest distance on a seabed.
Filmed and photographed in a well co-ordinated exercise that raised money for charity, and with the Guinness judge in attendance, Innocente descended to where his mountain bike awaited him on the seabed at a depth of 28m. He mounted and headed off over a slightly downward sloping terrain of rock, sand and mud.
He covered a distance of 65m in nine minutes of bubbly pedalling, to break his previous mark of 60m set in 2005. He reportedly had to use lower gears than planned, as there was 'more mud than I expected'.
Seven years ago, Innocente covered 1200m cycling lengths of a swimming pool. His penchant for extreme cycling has also taken him into the wilds of Kenya and Alaska, again in the cause of charity fund-raising.
