It has been reported that the man, named by the Sunderland Echo as James Askew, 35, from Stockton, died on Saturday, 24 January after getting into difficulty at the Stoney Cove inland site near Stoney Stanton.
It is thought that Askew experienced a problem with his regulator and became separated from his father on his second dive of the day. The alarm was raised and the casualty was found quickly and brought ashore by the Stoney Cove Rescue Team.
He was given first aid by the team, which is equipped with oxygen and a defibrillator, then by the emergency services before being airlifted by helicopter to Walsgrave Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The divers were reported to have been under the supervision of a school, Olympic Scuba of Seaham, County Durham. They were not under supervision or instruction by Stoney Cove.
Askew was described as "experienced".
Leicestershire Police are not treating the death as suspicious and the Health & Safety Executive has been informed. |
