The Sea Life London Aquarium is now, says the company, the “flagship in Sea Life’s network of 30 attractions in the UK and Europe”.
Opened in 1997 at the former County Hall beside Westminster Bridge, the aquarium features a labyrinth of passages and displays, including London’s only shark tank, containing sand tiger and nurse sharks.
The latest, £5 million revamp followed the purchase of the aquarium by Sea Life’s parent company, Merlin Entertainments, last April.
New features include the viewing of coral displays through “the stunning glass Ocean Tunnel”; a recreated shipwreck supporting marine life; the Shark Walk, in which visitors walk across a floating platform above the sharks display; and the Atlantic Cove dining and partying facility, with display tank backdrop.
Located on three floors, the aquarium features some 14 different oceanic and freshwater zones, with more than 350 species. It is involved in various conservation-related and breeding projects.
Sea Life London Aquarium is open from 10am to 6pm daily. General Office – 0207 967 8002; Venue Hire - 0207 487 0224; Tickets - ticketing@londonaquarium.co.uk
Among its 58 attractions in 12 countries, Merlin Entertainments also runs the nearby London Eye, Underwater Adventures, Madame Tussauds, Alton Towers, Warwick Castle, Thorpe Park and Chessington World of Adventures.
