Sharkwater, which went on general release in 2008 and is now available on DVD, was filmmaker Rob Stewart’s successful attempt to point up the ills of the shark-fin trade.
The highly lucrative market, mainly in Asia, for soup and other products derived from shark fin has led to widescale, unsustainable fishing of sharks. Many shark species are now down to fractions of their numbers of even 25 years ago.
Now, Stewart and conservation charity WildAid plan to produce a Chinese version of the documentary for distribution in China, a particularly large market for shark fin. The hope is to reach up to 300 million Chinese and persuade them to rethink their penchant for soups and other fin-derived commodities.
Many Chinese, it is claimed, remain unaware even of what they are eating, knowing shark-fin soup by a phrase that, translated, means “fish wing soup".
The project, and its inevitable costs, are being backed by shark conservation group Save The Blue, which is inviting donations towards the redubbing, production, promotion and distribution costs. A little carrot is the offer of a free Save The Blue shark pendant to those who donate.
Sharkwater was recently voted Diver magazine’s Publication of the Year.
