Galapagos death

The diver who lost his life, American Dennis Joslin, was holidaying in the islands and died after being separated from his buddies during a dive. His body was found and recovered.

The islands, 600 miles off mainland Equador and the site of Charles Darwin’s research into species development, are a protected area with carefully managed levels of tourism, on land and under water.

Divers are warned that conditions are generally for the experienced. Challenges include strong currents that can send a diver rapidly upward or downward with no warning other than the change in temperature.

It is not known whether sea conditions played any part in the death of Joslin, who lived with his family on a ranch in Texas.
