The incidents occurred in the run-up to the May Bank Holiday.
James Hyslop, 67, from Leeds, has died in hospital after surfacing unconscious in the company of his buddy from a dive in the Sound of Mull on 3 May. He was airlifted from his diving charter-boat to hospital in Oban, then to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where he failed to respond to further treatment.
A 62-year-old man remains missing and is presumed dead after going missing in the Sound of Mull on 1 May, while diving on the wreck of the Thesis. A call was put out by the diving charter boat after the man’s buddy surfaced to report that the two had become separated in strong currents after 30-40 minutes in the water.
Searches have been carried out by the Oban all-weather lifeboat, RN helicopter, divers and Coastguard Rescue teams.
On 29 April Steve Downs, 38, from near York, died after, according to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, surfacing “too quickly” while diving in a group on the Sound of Mull’s popular Rondo wreck.
He was airlifted to hospital in Oban but was pronounced dead on arrival. It was reported that Downs’ buddy had surfaced with him, but it was not clear whether or not the buddy underwent any precautionary treatment for a quick ascent.
*A man who died on 26 April after diving off Brixham has been named as Paul Leyland, 51, from Topsham, near Exeter. He was a member of the British Sub Aqua Club’s Exeter branch.
