In March the BSAC's Eastleigh branch in Hampshire took delivery of its new 5.8m Humber Attack hull. Successful sea trials have been carried out after some committed work by members fitting an outboard, steering, electronics and other gear - everything to make the boat seaworthy and ready to go diving.
The boat cost about £10,000, while the cost of ancilliaries – about £2000 – was offset by the sale of an old boat on eBay.
"This has been funded exclusively from club funds,” member Gary Beecheno told Divernet. An application for grant funding, from sources including the Lottery Fund, was considered. But in the current economic climate this was regarded as “unlikely to be successful”.
“Funds were accrued from subscriptions and social events, and we undertake to set up and break down a local event each year for which the organisers make a donation to club funds,” said Beecheno.
"We've also got funds from researchers at the University of Winchester who are conducting studies on memory impairment resulting from nitrogen narcosis. Thirty members of the club became participants in the research in return for a £900 donation to the club."
