Run by the British Society of Underwater Photographers (BSoUP) on 4 July, the competition came on the back of a spell of great weather, and the day just about held together for good underwater photographic opportunities.
The result was an attractive collection of sharp, colourful images of flora and fauna, with some human portraits thrown in among fish and other beasties.
From 170 images submitted in four competition categories, winners were voted on by the audience at an evening show of projected pictures at Plymouth’s National Marine Aquarium.
The three photographs reproduced here are the overall winner and the winners of two of the individual categories. Unusually, overall winner Cathy Lewis was not the winner of any of the separate divisions.
The Humour section winner came just nine days after the death of pop singer Michael Jackson; divers can, therefore, surely claim to have mounted one of the first tribute acts in memory of the star!
For full competition details, including a display of all photographic winners and runners-up, go to www.bsoup.org and select ‘Competitions’ on the home page, followed by ‘Splash-in’. Included are photo galleries for previous years’ events.
