Twenty divers from Inverness Sub Aqua Club assisted a Council team in clearing the River Ness, from Ness Islands to Greig Street Bridge.
Inevitable were the broken glass and drinks tins, but also brought out were items indicating accidental loss, a spot of waterborne fly-tipping or straightforward high-jinks.
So mobile phones, shopping trolleys, traffic cones, bicycles and road signs emerged. Two pick-up vans were needed to cart everything away.
The river does, however, remain fundamentally healthy. “While we did gather significant amounts of litter, it’s worth saying that the river is actually very clean, and we saw lots of fish-life while we were working in the water,” said George Brown, Chairman of Inverness SAC.
“Many of us are well used to swimming around and standing in the Ness up to our necks, as we also volunteer as safety marshals for the annual Children First River Ness charity raft race,” added Brown.
Inverness SAC, a branch of the British Sub-Aqua Club, was formed 41 years ago and has a membership of around 60. www.diveisac.org.uk
