Policeman dies on Channel dive

12 August 2009

A Metropolitan Police officer who died following a diving incident that occurred on Saturday 8 August has been named as Det-Sgt John Gilbert, 57, from Watford, Herts.

Gilbert was on a recreational dive with another officer some 14 miles off the Sussex coast when the pair got into difficulties and made a rapid ascent.

Solent Coastguard received a call for help from their dive-boat, the 10m catamaran the Proteus, which is operated by the BSAC-affiliated Metropolitan Police Sub Aqua Club out of Littlehampton. The two men were airlifted to Worthing hospital, where Gilbert died the following day.

Det-Sgt Gilbert worked in the Edgware child abuse investigation team. In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said: "We are saddened by the death of an MPS colleague. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time."

The other man, who has not been named, was released from hospital the day after the incident.
