Windsor’s Aquatic Element is to stage a series of illustrated evening presentations by well-known shark conservation protagonists, free and open to all. On one evening there will be a screening of the movie Sharkwater.
There will be daytime interactive shark awareness talks for interested parties in the town, including schools.
Raffles will have as their prizes gear donated by dive companies, including a computer, wetsuit, undersuit and beginner’s diving course.
During the week, the Mayor of Windsor will receive a special award on behalf of the town, following a campaign that led to those restaurants that had served shark-fin soup removing it from their menus.
Each day there will be an information booth in the town’s Peascod Street, manned by The Shark Trust, Sea Shepherd and Shark Angels. Here visitors will be able to learn all about sharks, their conservation needs and current campaigns.
The last two days of 5 and 6 August feature coastal visits. On the Saturday, volunteers can join members of Aquatic Element’s diving club in looking for shark and ray egg remains in the Littlehampton area, in order to identify which species frequent the area.
On the Sunday, divers have the opportunity to snorkel off North Cornwall with Richard Peirce, founder of the Shark Conservation Society, Chairman of The Shark Trust and whose Bude company Shark Cornwall runs regular shark observation trips in the area.
Windsor’s Shark Awareness Week is the brainchild of Aquatic Element’s owner John Carlin, a PADI Course Director and active regional representative of The Shark Trust, and Dale Bowie, an Aquatic Element diving club member.
