Atocha ring find

2 November 2009

A rare gold and amethyst ring has been found on the Nuestra Senora de Atocha, off Florida.

The famous 1622 wreck, 35 miles off Key West, was salved by treasure hunter Mel Fisher in the mid-eighties, but items are still found and brought up.

Family member Kim Fisher said that the ring, found by salvage divers, was the "first ring with an amethyst found on the Atocha site".

It has a "plain gold band with a large box-shaped gold setting on the top with amethyst inside".

The "almost black" amethyst "probably would have come from a large crystal in order to be that dark".

The Fishers run diving trips to the site. Mel Fisher’s Treasures - www.melfisher.com
