Local press reported on 6 November that a male diver had died after getting into difficulty. He was recovered from the water but, despite the efforts of air ambulance crew, died at the scene.
Immediately after the accident, Cumbria Police told press that it believed the man to be a visitor who did not live locally. It had yet to identify him and inform relatives.
Further reports have yet to appear.
The death was the second to occur at Wastwater within a space of three weeks. On 11 October Wayne Rowbotham, 40, from Rosebank, Thornton-Cleveleys in Lancashire, died while submerged in the lake.
His body was recovered by divers from North West Police.
Cumbria Police said that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. The coroner was informed and an inquest will be held.
Wastwater, which lies amongst scenic Lake District hills, is deep at 76m. Diving visitors are not charged, but there are no diving or other facilities.
The lake’s two main attractions are the Pinnacles, which start at about 13m and descend to more than 45m, and parts of a crashed WW2 bomber which lie in about 10m.
