Side-entrance for pups

14 November 2009

An aquarium shark has given birth to several pups – through its side.

The pregnant School shark’s unwelcome caesarean section-style delivery came after it was attacked by another shark, a Broadnose Sevengill, in its tank at the aquarium in Auckland, New Zealand.

The bite left a serious, penetrative gash from the top to the bottom of the shark’s body, in its midriff area.

Witnesses could hardly believe their eyes as, one by one, four pups "wriggled out" of the shark’s body and were left “floating in the tank”, according to one onlooker.

Staff stepped in quickly, retrieving the injured shark and the pups. A vet stitched the shark’s injuries, after it had yielded another four offspring.

The mum is now back in her tank, seemingly none the worse for wear. The eight pups will remain in an incubation tank for about two months.
