Grant opportunity for Welsh clubs
16 November 2009, updated 18 November
The National Lottery’s Community Chest grant, unique to Wales and available to physical activity groups including diving clubs, has been increased to £1000.
The Community Chest grant is awarded for one-year projects which will help more people become active in sport or other physically orientated pursuits.
Any eligible group is able to receive two grants of up to £1000 each in any financial year.
The grant is administered by the Sports Council for Wales, via Community Chest Officers in local councils.
Diving clubs to have benefitted recently from the scheme are Swansea Yacht and Sub-Aqua Club and Llantrisant Sub-Aqua Club, both in South Wales.
Swansea’s grant of £1000 was received early this month for instructor training. Mark Evans, Training Officer, told Divernet: “We need instructors within the club structure to ensure its survival.
“Without them we cannot provide the training needed for new diving members, and to existing members who want to progress their diving skills.”
With the funding, the club expects to train “11 instructors of various grades”.
Llantrisant’s £950 grant, received also in early November, is in support of its try-dives scheme. Phil Dewhurst, Club Secretary, told Divernet: “This grant money will be put towards the purchase of extra cylinders.”
The club has found that “as many as twenty people at a time can turn up on the night and this has put a strain on club equipment, particularly cylinders”.
