RoSPA to log all aquatic accidents

19 November 2009

The first national database for all water-related deaths and injuries has been launched by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.

The plan was revealed at RoSPA’s recent National Water Safety Congress, in Cardiff.

The Water Accident Injury Database (WAID) will, said RoSPA, “allow new levels of both detail and volume in the collection of data on drowning, which remains one of the leading causes of accidental death in the UK”.

“Details of reported non-fatal drowning, near misses and other water-related injuries will also be stored in the new database,” added the charity.

Improved knowledge of the types and numbers of accidents which are occurring, where and to whom, will help policy-makers decide on water safety management priorities.

In the past, annual statistics on sport diving accidents, fatal and non-fatal, have been published by the British Sub-Aqua Club and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
