The Kernow Federation of Diving Clubs has gathered the money over a period of seven years, from fund-raising activities at its diving festivals held regularly in the west of England.
The money has gone to the region’s main DCI research and recompression treatment facility, the Diving Diseases Research Centre in Plymouth.
The DDRC is based at the city’s Derriford Hospital, but is an independent organisation with charitable status.
It provides recompression treatments both for divers with DCI and for other illnesses and injuries where recompression can aid recovery.
Kernow’s latest top-up was a sum of £2400, raised at the Kernow Dive Festival 2009 in Cornwall. It brought the DDRC donation total to £8050.
“We are hoping to top £10,000 next year,” Kernow festivals co-organiser Chris Lobb told Divernet.
The Cornish-based Kernow is a conglomeration of individuals and club branches of the British Sub-Aqua Club and other affiliations, mainly in Cornwall but also in Devon.
Divers get together at meetings held several times a year. The diving festivals attract groups from further afield, including the Midlands.
Next year, Kernow will hold no fewer than three festivals – two in Cornwall and one in the Lundy area.
Participants have the opportunity to go diving together before settling into the party, usually in the form of a beach barbeque.
