The annual report details all manner of incidents, with statistical breakdowns of types, such as decompression, rapid ascents, equipment failure, poor technique, and boating and surface incidents.
Included are strings of educational accounts, for each incident type, of how the divers’ mishaps occurred.
Annual trends are examined. The most serious figure – that for fatalities – stands at 14 for this year, compared to an average of 16 over the past 10 years.
The BSAC gathers data for incidents involving any sport diver in the UK and BSAC members overseas.
The 2009 Diving Incidents Report was first announced at the BSAC’s Diving Officers’ Conference in London on 5 December.
