The singer and songwriter’s mother Jean, 86, has decided to end her campaign Justice for Kirsty.
However, she has said that she plans still to uncover more about the fatal incident, under the auspice of a World Health Organisation health and safety campaign.
Kirsty MacColl was run over and killed by a speedboat off Cozumel, Mexico in 2000, while scuba diving with her two sons. She was 41.
One of the boat’s crew, Cem Yam, 28, came forward to say that he was at the helm and was convicted of culpable homocide in 2003. A sentence of nearly three years in prison was reduced to a small fine plus damages.
Jean MacColl has long alleged that the boat’s owner Guillermo González Nova, a wealthy businessman, was driving the vessel when it ran over her daughter, and should face trial over her death.
Kirsty MacColl was a successful folk and rock singer. Particularly widely heard was her Christmas release Fairytale Of New York, recorded with Shane MacGowan.
