The adult female was found well in from the shoreline amongst marsh vegetation, following a high tide.
The area group of British Divers Marine Life Rescue were initially encouraged to find the creature in a seemingly healthy state, being a good weight and showing no signs of injury.
Working in freezing conditions and facing a race against time with a rapidly falling tide, the team managed to place the porpoise on one of BDMLR’s custom-made rescue pontoons and get it to the water.
With medics tending the creature in the shallows to allow her to regain her balance and swimming co-ordination, the team became worried when the creature first failed to make any attempt to move.
However, all of a sudden the creature finally decided that it was time to go and, to the team’s relief, was last seen heading for deep water.
*A young male pilot whale is at SeaWorld in San Diego, California – because he wants to be.
The creature, named Sully, was found stranded and emaciated on a Caribbean beach. After a spell at Curacao Sea Aquarium, he was air-freighted in a special crate to San Diego for recuperation.
Once Sully had recovered health and regained weight, SeaWorld recently tried several times to release him into open water. But he always followed the boat back to port, even having mixed with a pod of his own kind.
Now he’s back in a SeaWorld pool and is being lined up with some female company.
