Liveaboard goes scientific

An Egyptian conservation group is to use a large liveaboard vessel for research and educational programmes in the Egyptian Red Sea.
The Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA) will make the 37m, steel-hulled Red Sea Defender available to researchers from all over the world.
Tasks will include undergraduate and postgraduate education and research, as well as outreach programmes aimed at schools and other organisations.
Knowledge and skills in marine biology, research techniques, conservation needs and diving operations will be taught and used.
There will also be the opportunity to join regular HEPCA research teams on monitoring programmes.
In the long term, Red Sea Defender will be allied to a new HEPCA research centre, to be built on the coast at Abu Dahab.
