Off Northumberland, the North East Cetacean Project (NECP) is monitoring dolphins, porpoises and whales.
The project team is asking sea users including divers to provide feedback, in response to an “urgent need for more offshore data, especially in light of new Government initiatives to improve conservation measures in our seas”.
The project partnership includes Marinelife, Natural England and Northern Experience Wildlife Tours.
The programme kicked off in January but now, with sea activity increasing for the Spring and Summer, the team hopes for increased response from the public.
It has launched an information and sightings response website, www.northeastcetaceans.org.uk.
Alternatively, sightings can be reported by phone to NECP co-ordinator Martin Kitching on 01670 827465 or mobile 07908 119535.
Meanwhile the Cornwall Wildlife Trust is running a basking sharks survey for a third consecutive year this summer, and is looking for spotters.
In 2009, 64 people conducted cliff-top surveys around Land’s End, where the sharks are known to congregate to feed, but any sightings by divers and other sea-users would be welcomed.
Last year, volunteers logged 964 sightings, as well as further sightings of common dolphins, grey seals, ocean sunfish and leatherback turtles.
Funding from British International Helicopters and the BBC has enabled the survey to keep going.
