Archaeology in Alexandria

Divers from the University of Ulster’s Maritime Archaeology Centre have conducted a 10-day course for trainees who intend to work on “maritime archaeology under threat in Africa”.

Fifteen archaeologists from northern and eastern Africa attended the programme, based at Alexandria University's recently opened, state-of-the-art Centre for Maritime Archaeology and Underwater Heritage.

Additional support was provided by Britain’s Nautical Archaeology Society, Southampton University and the British Museum.

Training dives were made in Alexandria’s eastern harbour, and the Ulster divers were privileged to be able to dive on the remains of the famous Pharos lighthouse, a wonder of the ancient world.
