Gallipoli discoveries
2 July 2010
Archaeological divers have found remains of ships involved in Turkey’s WW1 Gallipoli conflict of 1915.
The discoveries, by a team from Australia and Turkey, included the wreck of the British destroyer HMS Louis, sunk by Turkish gunfire in Suvla Bay.
In Anzac Cove where Australian and New Zealand troops landed, new finds included a barge used for taking off the dead and wounded.
Project Beneath Gallipoli received a grant of Aus $21,000 from Australia’s New South Wales Government, plus private sponsorship.
