Extra attraction for Cayman Islands

15 July 2010, updated 16 July

A new wreck site is to be created off the Caribbean’s Grand Cayman.

The US Navy’s decommissioned submarine rescue vessel USS Kittiwake will be scuttled off Seven Mile Beach in November as an artificial reef and diving attraction.

The 66m-long ship will be placed in 20m of water and, if it lands upright as planned, its uppermost extremities will lie just 6m down.

This will make the wreck suitable for divers, freedivers and even snorkellers, as the bridge area and funnel will be easily visible from the surface.

The ship will join the 100m-long Russian frigate Captain Keith Tibbetts, sunk off Cayman Brac in 1996.
