The diver, named by Scottish press as Kim Eberst, 47, from Dundee, was reported to be training with fellow members of the British Sub-Aqua Club’s Dundee branch when she got into difficulty at about 8.30pm yesterday.
The group were reported to be diving from the shore in shallow water, close to the Forth Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre.
As Eberst was brought out of the sea, one diver ran to the Coastguard station to raise the alarm. A Coastguard officer went to the scene as an ambulance was dispatched and a rescue helicopter scrambled.
It was reported that members of the diving group tried to revive Eberst before she was airlifted to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where it was confirmed that she had died.
Fife Police were informed and will report on the incident to the Procurator Fiscal.
