The survey, Alcohol and Diving, is being carried out by the Diving Diseases Research Centre in Plymouth.
“The aim of the survey is to gain a better insight regarding the alcohol consumption of UK recreational divers generally, as it has been noted from past data collection that divers regularly consume alcohol around the timing of a dive,” says the DDRC.
Whether on a diving holiday or a club weekend away, social drinking is common.
Obvious concerns for diving on a day after drinking include dehydration, since alcohol is a diuretic and dehydration is a risk factor for decompression illness, as well as alertness and general clarity of thought.
In the longer term amongst heavier drinkers, alcohol-related health problems such as weight gain and coronary deterioration can increase susceptibility to DCI and other ailments while diving.
Participants in the survey will, says the DDRC, be making “an important contribution to diving research”.
Divers are asked to put aside “a little time” to answer the “anonymous” online questionnaire. Information provided will be “in confidence and completely untraceable to the diver”.
