Shell shock

According to the BBC, an individual from Caverswall near Stoke-on-Trent contacted police when, presumably, he or she came to realise that the ordnance, reported to be a shell, could be unstable and dangerous.

Staffordshire Police said that it worked with an ordnance disposal team to move the “badly corroded shell, which contained a detonator” to a nearby field where it was destroyed.

Ordnance raised from wrecks can become increasingly dangerous when brought ashore. Cordite explosive becomes unstable as it dries out.

It was not reported whether the shell was being held by the diver who salvaged it or by another individual.
