She was presented with the Emlyn Jones Award 2010 at the recent Chief Executives’ Convention in Leicester.
The annual award, run by the Sport and Recreation Alliance, recognises outstanding achievement in the administration of sport and recreation, in the recipient’s main working field and, where it arises, other interests.
The Alliance, formerly the Central Council of Physical Recreation, has some 300 members drawn from governing and representative bodies of sport and recreation in the UK. They include the FA, Rugby Football Union, UK Athletics, the Ramblers, British Rowing and the Royal Academy of Dance.
Tetley has spent 30 years working in the field of sports scuba. The past 15 have been spent with the BSAC, working to promote the club as an accessible, sociable way of going about the sport.
Upon receiving her award from Brigid Simmonds, Chair of the Sport and Recreation Alliance, Tetley said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have been selected for this award. BSAC and diving have been such an integral part of my life for the past 30 years and so to be recognised for my contribution to this wonderful sport is an honour.”
Particular achievements have included pushing development of the club’s safeguarding policy; persuading schools to adopt snorkelling as a physical activity; and, as a former lacrosse player, launching aqua lacrosse amongst BSAC branches.
Before joining the BSAC professionally, Tetley worked for Eaton Publications’ DIVER, then the club’s official magazine. She held various administrative and promotional posts, while diving in her spare time as a BSAC branch member.
During this period, Tetley played a key role in establishing Marine Life Rescue, which became British Divers Marine Life Rescue.
